Lesson Course 3. Paying Attention


How attentive are you? One way to check is to run this little thought experiment: sit quietly in a chair, with a second-hand watch or clock nearby, close your eyes, and check to see how long you can go without thinking of anything. If you can go more than 5 seconds without any thought, that is far better than average.
What does this little test say about attention? Actually, you are not paying attention as such, you are paying attention to not paying attention. In other words, you just measured your limited capacity to resist distraction. Resisting distraction is the other side of the focus coin. If you can resist distraction, you can focus on any object of thought without being distracted. So what? Being able to focus is a skill that is crucially important to developing your ability to remember.
         There are ways to develop the ability to focus. Before I get into that, however, let me illustrate a related point. You perhaps have heard the instruction: “Do not think about pink elephants.” I tell you now, “Do not think about pink elephants.” Were you able to not think about pink elephants? Unlikely. Real elephants are not pink. A pink elephant is such a compelling image so that you are hard pressed to not see it in your mind’s eye.

Make Memory Targets Compelling

This makes a point about focus. If the target of focus is compelling, it is hard not to focus on it. Thus, whatever you need and want to focus on is easier to attend if you make it compelling. If a target of focus is compelling, it becomes encoded more strongly. You learned in Lesson 1 that encoding is the first crucial step in the memorization process cycle. One of the best ways for a compelling focus of attention is to make a target of attention a mental image, either a literal simulation of the actual target or a metaphorical representation of it. Generally, the most robust images are not literal but those that are ridiculously exaggerated (like pink elephants). This tactic is the basis used by “memory athletes” who compete in international contests to see who can memorize the most material in the shortest amount of time. I will say much more about specific mental imagery tactics in Lesson 9 where mnemonics are explained.
The other obvious way to make compelling memory targets is to motivate yourself to remember. As I explained in my book on The Learning Skills Cycle, the centerpiece hub of the cycle is motivation to learn. Approach learning tasks with a zeal that drives you to do all things needed to memorize and the success in learning then strengthens the motivation to learn more. As I explained in the story about my “conversion” in the 7th grade, once I learned how to get to the top of the class and how good that felt, I was motivated to achieve that standing every year.

Avoiding Distraction

While it is true that the brain processes information in parallel, conscious memorization operates serially. That is, you consciously attend one thing at a time, switching at high speeds from one targets of attention to another. Any time you switch targets, you disrupt the processes of encoding and initiation of consolidation. This explains why multi-tasking greatly impairs memorization.
School environments are notorious for creating distractions. Students in a classroom have to make special effort to stay focused on instructional material.

Learning to Focus

Conscious focus of attention is a skill that can be learned through deliberate practice. The best proof comes from Hindu ascetics who do such astonishing things as voluntarily regulating their heart rate and blood pressure or lying on a bed of nails. The Buddhist meditation practices provide a practical way for anybody to train their brains to focusyou don’t have to be a Buddhist. The technique that works for me is called “mindfulness meditation.” The objective is to be mindful of what you are thinking and to force yourself to think of only one thing, usually slow, deep breathing. All extraneous silent mental chatter and images are pushed out of consciousness.
See how long you can sustain sole focus on your breathing and keep out all intruding thoughts. Notice all things associated with the breathing, but nothing else. At first you may feel aches and pains you have not been attending because you were thinking of other things. Ignoring these aches consciously during meditation adds to the value of the exercise. Hear the sound of the moving air with each breath. Feel the pulse in your neck. If you don’t feel it, crook your neck or lie down to feel it in your back or hear it by turning your ear to a pillow. Notice the rhythm and the gradual slowing of breathing. Feel your clothes shifting position and the tension flowing out of your muscles, first in the jaw, then back and legs. The first time you try it, you likely will lose focus within a couple of seconds. But after a few days of 15-minute sessions, you will realize your brain has learned how to focus for several minutes or more. Not only does this kind of meditation teach your brain how to concentrate, it also lowers blood pressure, reduces memory-impairing stress, and contributes to peace of mind.
As you develop the capacity to focus, reinforce the training by being more attentive to every target of attention that you are trying to memorize. Also, notice what is associated with the information you are trying to memorize. If you are learning about an historical event, like the First Continental Congress, notice what is going on in the meeting hall, where it took place, why that place was chosen, what prompted the meeting, who stood out in the meeting, and so on. In short, notice the context in which things exist. Paying attention to such details at the time of initial encoding provides huge numbers of cues that strengthen the encoding and can serve as handles to help you retrieve the information in the future. The context obviously aids in understanding as well. Sometimes, just the understanding helps you figure out something you actually failed to remember.

Summary:

  •   1 To strengthen encoding and the initial stages of memory consolidation, make memory targets compelling. The best way is to represent the targets as mental images.
  •      Do not multi-task. Alter you learning environment as best you can to reduce distracting stimuli and thoughts.
  •      Train your brain to focus. Make time for a 15-minute mindfulness meditation session every day and try to focus on your every experience throughout the day.
  •      Don’t go around in a mental fog. Notice things. Be consciously aware of everything.

Learning Course Lesson 1. Stages of Memory Formation


As mentioned in the introduction to this free short course on learning and memory, when I was in the 7th grade, I finally became motivated to be a better student than the D-student I was in the 4th grade. I don’t remember what my grades were in the 5th and 6th grades, but it is a good bet they weren’t impressive. When in the 7th grade, the crush I had on my gorgeous female teacher, Miss Torti, made me take stock of what I had to do to make good grades to impress her by being the top student in the class.

One of the first things I realized was that no one thing was the problem. I could study more, but that in and of itself did not seem likely to improve my memory ability. No, I did not want to work harder. I wanted to figure out how to work smarter. In those head-scratching days in the first few weeks of 7th grade, I realized that several things must be in play, and I had to figure out what they were and work on improving my ability to do those things.

First, it was rather obvious that I couldn’t memorize some piece of her instruction if it did not register in the first place. The formal word for that is “encoding,” which of course I did not know. But I did intuitively understand that I had to pay attention to what Miss Torti said and to those things in my books that she said were important to know. Moreover, even my 7th grade brain figured how that I had to pay attention to get things to register. So, I started to pay attention more intensely. I made myself stop thinking about other things or day-dream during her instruction.

I quickly learned that paying attention was a big help. But I also discovered that a day or so after a lesson, I forgot what I knew that I had payed attention to well enough to learn. Then the obvious hit me: What good is learning if I don’t remember it? To impress Miss Torti, I had to remember what she was teaching days, even weeks, after she taught it, as when quiz time rolled around.
So, despite my lack of understanding as to what was going on, I realized that I had to check myself every day or so to see if I remembered things I had just learned. If I forgot, I had to re-learn it. Now that is aggravating. Why can’t I learn it just once? So, one thing I figured out was that initial paying attention was not enough. I needed to pay attention hard. What did that mean? It meant to me that I had to think hard about what I was paying attention to. What did I already know that was similar? How could this new information be important? Were there some associated cues that I could package with this information to help me remember it? How could I use this new information to learn other things? Some of this thinking did not occur all at once. Some things occurred to me a few hours or days later. Unknown to me, there was a process going on in my brain that scientists call “memory consolidation.” This is a biochemical process that is spread out over time, because the neural circuits needed to store a representation of the information have to be constructedthat takes a while.

As I thought about things over time, it also became obvious that in order to think about the academic content, I was actually retrieving it so I could think about it. There is a process associated with retrieval in general that I did not learn about for some six decades later when neuroscientists discovered that retrieval triggers re-consolidation. That is, when you retrieve something you have learned, the brain treats it as a well-formed “new” piece of information, well-encoded because it is already partially learned, and that it can be associated with anything new at the time, such as the context at the time retrieval was triggered. Then the old and new get re-consolidated together as a new, more strongly encoded item of information. In other words, memorizing is not an event at one point in time. It is a cyclic process.

Clearly what we can now see, though I did not understand it in the 7th grade, was that memorization was a cycle involving encoding, consolidation, retrieval, and re-consolidation. Each time the brain puts some new information through this cycle, the memory gets stronger and stronger, more and more permanent. In the 7th grade, I stumbled into this cycle without really understanding why it worked. All I knew was that it worked. Wow, did it work!  … all As and number one ranking in every course, from 7th grade onward until college. Many decades later as I learned more about this cycle, it inspired me to write the book for all students of all ages, Better Grades, Less Effort.

Summary:

  1. New information needs to be strongly encoded in order to be remembered.
  2. Memory requires nurturing and protection in the mind to allow consolidation into a more permanent memory.
  3. Forcing yourself to retrieve a weakly formed memory strengthens the encoding and provides the opportunity to incorporate new cues and information.\
  4. A retrieved memory is re-consolidated, strengthening the original version.

Learning Lesson 2. Getting Motivated


Do you remember my story in the Introduction to this short course about how motivated changed me from a D student in the 4th grade to an all-A student in the 7th grade? We don’t all have a Miss Torti in our lives to motivate us to be effective learners, but we all have something. If you can’t find a source of motivation, make one up. It can change your life.

In my book for parents and teachers, The Learning Skills Cycle, I made it a point to begin the cycle with motivation. If motivated to learn, a student not only acquires the knowledge but, in the process, can become more learning competent as learning skills develop. As a student realizes that such skills have been acquired, confidence about the ability to learn grows, and this in turn stimulates more motivation to learn. This positive feedback cycle does not occur if students do not acquire learning skills.

The basis of the motivation does not have to be particularly inspiring or honorable. My physical attraction to Miss Torti certainly lacked such worthiness. For motivation to give you the drive needed to do all that is necessary to become a good learner, you must feel compelled and passionate about the objective.
Bad educational environments and experiences stamp out the motivation to learn. In my work in consulting with middle-school teachers, I have found that by that grade level many students have been turned off of learning. They had too many bad learning experiences in the earlier grades. This is especially true of the majority of students who have not learned how to excel in school. Week after week, year after year, ordinary performance kills their interest in learning. Such students develop defense mechanisms. “Why do I have to learn this?’ “This book is boring.” “My teacher doesn’t like me.” “I could make As, but I don’t want to.” “School work is for nerds.” So goes a litany of excuses.

These problems have always plagued teachers who try to motivate the under-achievers. In today’s standards-based, high-stakes testing environment, we have the new problem that a teacher is liable to give an answer that is equivalent to “You need to learn this to score well on the state learning achievement tests so that you make your teachers and school look good.” This, you can be assured, does not do much to motivate students.

Well, learners, I have shocking news for you. Motivation that works in learning has to come from inside of you, not from the outside influence of parents, teachers, school district, or whatever. You are like horses that can be led to water. Outside influences can't make you drink if you are not thirsty.
So, how do you make yourself thirsty for effective and efficient learning? Well, the efficiency goal comes easy. We are all rather lazy about school work, and thus naturally want our learning to occur with minimal effort. The effective goal should also come easy, because what is the point of trying to learn if you aren’t good at it? What is the point of learning if you don’t remember it?
Beyond such basics, I can list several things that will motivate you to learn:

·       The Wonder of Learning. We live in a universe and world full of natural wonder. Every academic subject is wondrous to some people. Why not you? You can see the wonder in every subject (yes, even algebra, if you look for it.).

Babies are fascinated by what they see, hear, and touch. Watch a baby as a mobile dangle overhead. Exploratory activities become conspicuously pronounced if the mobile objects are close enough to be manipulated. Everything a baby encounters is new and astonishing. Why do we allow ourselves to lose that fascination with the world as we get older? For some people, the more they learn, the less wondrous the world seems. Among adults, scientists seem to be an exception (to a biologist, pond scum is beautiful and wondrous).

·       Relevance. The real-world relevance of academic subjects is not always self-evident to someone learning the subject for the first time. Even if the learner understands the relevance, the subject may not be relevant for them at the time they have to learn it. The first step in seeing relevance is to realize that our lack of knowledge about a subject has put us in a small and narrow world that blinds us to the relevance. Once we know there is relevance we do not yet perceive, we have reason to look for it. In other words, we need to try to identify the relevance of what we need to learn for us. Once we realize how we might use new information or how it might make us a better or more competent person, we have reason to learn it. Even if the relevance is limited to the recognition we would get from successful learning, that in itself can be sufficient relevance.

·       Rewards and Punishments. We have all been amazed by performance animals that demonstrate astonishing feats of learning at Sea World, circuses, and similar venues. These animals learn all sorts of tricks they seemingly have no need to learn. Their training process is known as “operant conditioning.” They learn under conditions in which they are punished for failure to learn and rewarded for successful learning. Direct punishment does not work very well as a motivator. As used by trainers, punishment occurs in the failure to receive a reward if the learning objective is not met.

In a typical school environment, grades are the usual basis for reward and punishment. This is frequently not enough. Recall that my low grades in the 4th grade did not motivate me to get better. What worked finally in the 7th grade was seeing Miss Torti pay attention to me because I was showing improvement. The more I learned, the more she payed attention to me. The principle here is called “positive reinforcement.” It means that when we receive a reward, even a small one, for generating a certain behavior, we are motivated to repeat the behavior. So, the practical point for students is to construct or find positive reinforcement for themselves for improving their learning skills and resulting learning successes. You may not have a Miss Torti to reward you for your achievements, but you can reward yourself.

·       Ownership and Pride.  I think it was back in the Great Depression that someone coined the expression, “Knowledge is something nobody can take away from you.” You may have things stolen, you may lose your job, you may lose out in a competition, but your knowledge is always yours. And you earned it. You have the powerful sense of ownership. This is the obvious benefit of projects where the student builds something, like robots or a science-fair presentation. Even less obvious products, like cursive writing, are something a student owns in a very personal way, and if it is done well, can take great pride in. Speaking of cursive, in the first 6 weeks of the 7th grade, I had to take a penmanship course. I apparently have good hand-eye coordination, and I readily learned to write well. I took great pride in showing others my handwriting, because I knew it was really good. That little success may have had more to do with my 7th grade academic reformation than anything else. To this day, I still get compliments on my handwriting. It was a great feeling in the 7th grade, and still feels good every time I look at my handwriting.

·       Attitude Adjustment. No one likes failure. No one likes to feel inferior. Everyone relishes achievement. Failure should not be an option. However, we make failure an option by constructing excuses for it. We develop attitudes to explain away our failures and in the process perpetuate the failures. At some point, when it dawns on us that our attitude is counter-productive, we realize the value of adjusting our attitudes to be more positive.

·       Acting “as if.” Behavior changes attitudes, emotions, and motivation.  Conscientious students try to adjust their attitudes and feelings by force of will—this often fails. A better result, especially with students who are not all that conscientious, can sometimes occur with the principle enunciated about 100 years ago by the famous psychologist William James. He noted that how a person acts can change his or her own thinking, attitude, and feelings. This is the "as if" principle, which states that behaving the way one wants to be will help make it so. We know that mind can sometimes change behavior, but the "as if" principle says that behavior can change mind.

·       Learning Self-control. Few things in life are as motivating as when you reach the point where you are in charge, where you discover that your capacity for self-control gives you power. Once you discover that you have the power to be a good learner, you will want to seize the added power that learning gives you in this world.

·       Confidence. Confidence is something you have to earn. As you begin your trek to effective and efficient learning, small successes will happen. They will build on each other and give you reason to be more confident. When I made my first A in a difficult subject, I realized, “Hey, I can do this. I just did. Maybe I am not as stupid as my former Ds suggested.” Belief in your ability to learn can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. As confidence slowly grows, you start thinking about what worked in the learning effort, and you know you can do more of that. You start to believe that you can learn how to learn.

Summary

1. Find what is awesome and wonderful in everything you have to learn.
2. Identify why or how what you have to learn is relevant to something in your life.
3. Give yourself little rewards for each successful learning event.
4. Take ownership of what you learn and be proud of yourself for knowing it.
5. If your attitude about school or learning is impeding successful learning, adjust your attitude to be more positive.
6. Act "as if" you are a good learner, and do the things good learners do.
7. Control yourself. Be the "master of your own ship."
8. Gain confidence from successful learning events. Believe in yourself.

A New Free Short Course in Improving Learning and Memory


School is out. Whether you have school children, or attend school yourself, or participate in professional training, what shall you do this summer to get ready for this Fall? Because of the pandemic, school may or may not be conducted by distance education methods. Either way, school will start. What could be a better time to prepare for less-than-ideal school environments?
I think this is an opportune time for me to create a series of posts to help you or your children become more effective and efficient learners. . In just 14 short blog posts, I think I can tell you most of what you need to know and do to become a better learner, both for your short-term needs and as a lifelong learner.
I should be an expert on learning by now, after some 54 years as a college professor. I have written four books on learning and memory (see my web site at WRKlemm.com for details). I have published scientific research on memory. My blog posts in this area have over 3.5 million reader views. I have been on the editorial boards of six scholarly education journals,
My interest in learning and memory began with my own early childhood difficulties in school. I remember vividly my first day in a public school in Mobile, Alabama. It was a typical warm and humid Southern Fall morning as I walked by myself to school. In those days, most kids walked to a neighborhood school, leaving home alone and perhaps picking up a few classmates along the walk.  I think my mom took me to pre-school orientation, so all the orientation and procedural things had already been done before opening dayI don’t remember any of that. In fact, I don’t remember anything that happened in school that day. I do remember my exuberant strides on the walk to school. Along the way, I passed a beautiful row of hibiscus bushes lining the sidewalk. I paused to inspect the flowers, probed a bloom with my fingerdamned bee stung me! This may have been a bad omen that hung a dark cloud over my school for the first three grades. During those first three years, two in Mobile and the third grade in a public school in Memphis, Tennessee, I remember nothing about school. Nothing. I do remember being interested in learning how to read, because I wanted to know what was in those comic-strip bubbles I saw in the newspaper my folks had at home.
I remember the fourth grade, because I hated school and hated my teacher. I don’t consciouslly recall anything I learned that year. The only event I remember was when movie talent scouts came into class to scout for prospects for the movie they planned called The Yearling. I and all the boys sat up straight, smiled at the visitors, and tried to get their attention, all to no avail. The scouts ended up picking a kid my age, Claude Jarman Jr., from Nashville, who played the lead in the film that came out in 1946. The only other thing I remember was my teacher. My fourth-grade eyes saw her as old and frumpy. For reasons I don’t remember, I do remember challenging her a lot. Whatever she tried to teach was tainted. I did poorly in school, made many Ds on the report cards that came out every six weeks. No doubt, the Ds were deserved. Certainly, I had an attitude problem.
I don’t remember anything about the 5th and 6th grades either. The first thing I remember about the 7th grade was that I got to go to a new public middle school and swelled with budding grown-up pride as I paid the fare each day to ride a city bus to school. I don’t remember Memphis having school buses, though when I transferred to a county school in the 8th grade there were school buses for rural kids.
The second thing I remember about the 7th grade was my teacher. My hormone-flooded 7th grade eyes saw her as young and gorgeous. Miss Torti was her name. In that first week of school, she had a boyfriend come to class, all decked out in Navy uniform finery. This was my first experience with the darkness of jealousy. The second jealousy event came when I realized that there was a girl in Miss Torti’s class who was always getting Miss Torti’s attention and praise. Maybe you had kids like her in one of your classes. Remember how when a teacher asked a questioned, there was always a kid who pumped up and down in her seat, raising her hand, “Ask me, ask me. I know!” This girl was like that, and most irritating of all, she always knew the right answer. I hated her. Well, I was not going to let her outshine me in Miss Torti’s eyes. If being smart is what got Torti’s attention, I decided I was going to be smarter than this twerpy girl.
Of course, I had no idea how to get smarter. But it was obvious that I had to memorize whatever Miss Torti was teaching. I began to pay attention. I thought about what I had to do to remember things. I actually studied for a change. Amazingly, in every six-week report period of the 7th grade, I made all As. I had gone from Ds to all-As in just two years. Never got anywhere with Miss Torti though. Even so, I got in the habit of enjoying high grades, and learned even more about how to learn more effectively and efficiently. Early on, I learned memory principles and mnemonics. I never made less than an A in any course in any grade until I got to the University of Tennessee in a pre-veterinary curriculum. I did so well academically there that I got an early admission to Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine after just two years of pre-vet. I graduated with High Honors. Later, I got a Ph.D. from Notre Dame, finishing all course work and research in 2.5 years.
Later, my interest and success in learning led me to a PhD and a career in neuroscience, where I learned even more about learning and memory. Perhaps you can see why I feel compelled to share what I know about this subject.

Brain Assignment of Values Varies with Context


This morning as you opened the refrigerator door, you looked at the food options for breakfast and asked yourself, “What shall I have for breakfast? Cereal topped with bananas? Sausage and eggs? Pancakes? Fruit bowl? Bagel? Each option has a value, which changes from morning to morning. Each morning, the brain you assess the relative values and decides which food choice counts the most for that particular moment. How does the brain determine that value?

Whether it is in the home, workplace, the school, or in inter-personal relationships, we typically face experiences to which we assign value. Often, we must weigh the relative values of several competing experiences in order to choose a single option to act upon.

In humans, it seems clear that value assignment depends heavily upon function in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). But how does this circuitry assign value? Two possibilities come to mind: 1) the neural response to the stimuli associated with an experience may be consistent across different contexts, or 2) the encoding may be relative, depending on the experience’s context. Relative coding seems likely for the breakfast choice example mentioned above. Any morning’s choice will not be the same every morning. The choice depends, among other things, on how you feel, your level of appetite, and your recent breakfast choices.

Also, value assignment can be thought of as a learning experience. If we have never tasted bananas, for example, our first exposure entails a value assessment on how good it tastes, which we then learn to apply to our future decisions about whether we want to have banana for breakfast or any other time. Clearly, feedback is important. How did it taste and how did that taste compare with other kinds of food that we have eaten, especially eaten recently? If you have had bananas every morning for a week, you may be tired of eating bananas. Then, there is the issue of the context in which perception occurs. Bananas might have more appeal for breakfast that they do for supper.

Research a decade or so ago revealed that our perception is stable across multiple contexts. For example, we can see a banana in the light or dark. We see a green banana or a ripe yellow banana, and still know it is a banana. We can even shut our eyes and feel the shape and still conclude it is a banana.

Assigning value to what we perceive could be another matter. Does value depend on the choice context, rather than being invariant across contexts? That is, do neural circuits re-scale value assignment depending on the context? Earlier fMRI brain-scan studies showed that context is important to value assessment in several areas (mPFC, orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), and cingulate cortex). A recent study has examined whether context-depending coding occurs in all PFC regions and how it is affected by feedback information. Twenty-eight human participants (both sexes) performed an instrumental learning task in which they were trained to maximize their monetary payoff. Choice options produce either reward (adding money to their account) or punishment (subtracting money). Subjects performed four learning trials while in the fMRI scanner in which they were repeatedly were presented with a pair of abstract symbols. For each run, they were presented eight different symbols pairs to produce four choice contexts (i.e., reward/partial feedback, reward/complete, punishment/partial, and punishment/complete). In each trial, they chose between two symbols associated with a certain outcome of money reward. Thus, the contexts were defined based on the possible outcome (either reward or punishment of receiving or losing a specified amount of money). Half of the trials presented complete feedback in which the outcome of the unchosen option was displayed as well, while in the other half of trials subjects were informed of only the value payoff of chosen options.

As repeated learning trials progressed, subjects were learning to optimize their payoffs. MRI signal change reflecting differences between good and bad outcomes was higher for chosen than for unchosen outcomes, with no difference between the chosen outcomes in terms of whether the feedback was partial or complete.

Increased activity in all of the PFC regions and cingulate cortex confirmed their role in encoding and processing value assessment. Anterior PFC activity increased for chosen outcomes, but decreased by unchosen outcome processing. Activity patterns also varied depending on whether partial or complete feedback was given. How does the brain assign different values according to situational context? The explanation is that the neurons must rescale their impulse discharge response to the perceived value of object properties relative to the specific context.

The amount of feedback, partial or complete, greatly affected context-dependent value learning, as revealed by brain activation in multiple regions of PFC and the cingulate cortex. Complete feedback produced the best learning and also caused a switch to assigning value depending on the context. Overall, the subjects learned equally well in reward and punishment context.

The authors used a complicated way to show what we already know from personal experience. We learn what we value from the feedback we receive from our choices, and the value we assign depends on situational context. We readily learn to like bananas on breakfast cereal, but bananas have much less value on pizza at dinner.

The demonstration of the role of prefrontal cortex is important. These results tell us that concussion, stroke, or other damage that affects this part of the brain will impair our ability to make reasoned judgments about the choices we make.
The take-home message is that value assessment occurs in multiple PFC areas in multiple ways, and neural activity does depend on situational context. The coding process is learned by experience and the comprehensiveness of feedback. This learning is consistent with what has been learned over decades of learning and memory research, as I summarize in my books on memory.

Learning to Be More Truthful: Awareness

To continue excerpting from the draft of my book called, Realville, How to Get Real in an Unreal World, I now wish to examine the crucial role of being aware of one’s own habits and the behavior of others. 

Habit


Any attitude or behavior, if sufficiently rehearsed, becomes a habit. Once formed, habits automate attitude and behavior, producing mental “knee-jerk” responses to the events of life. To paraphrase the Jerry Lee Lewis song title, in our society, there is a “Whole lot of knee-jerking going on.” The key to honorable behavior is to be aware of one’s own attitudes and behaviors. Obviously, it is hard to be aware of one’s behaviors that have become an unconscious habit. If habits contribute to personal integrity, habit is a good thing. However, if you continue to repeat untruthful attitudes and behaviors, you are creating a habit to behave untruthfully. You are making yourself a dishonorable person.
A clear example of teaching oneself to be dishonorable comes from a British university study showing that people become desensitized to lying. The experiment involved creating scenarios whereby people could lie repeatedly, and they would get paid more based on the magnitude of the lies. In the experiment with 80 people, pairs of people in separate rooms viewed a photograph of a jar filled with pennies. The photo was clear only for one person in the pair, whose task was to advise the other person how many pennies were in the jar. The person making the estimate was told that the reward would vary on each trial, without knowing critical details about the built-in incentive structure. They received no feedback. The game was rigged so that the more the advice was deliberately exaggerated, the more financial reward was given. Experimenters set the conditions so that lying could benefit both partners, benefit the advising partner at the expense of the other partner, or benefit the advising partner only without affecting the other person.
The greatest lying occurred when it benefited only the lying person. Dishonesty persisted at lower levels if the partner also benefited. There was zero lying under conditions were lying was punished by lower reward while the partner benefitted. People's lies grew bolder the more they lied. They were getting into the habit of lying. Brain scans revealed that activity in a key emotional center of the brain, the amygdala, became less active and desensitized as the dishonesty grew. The amygdala processes fear, which suggests that the people became less fearful of the consequence of lying. In essence, the brain was being trained to lie.
We should conclude that a little bit of dishonesty is a slippery slope that can lead one to grow more dishonest. This provides a rationale for early realization and corrective action of untruthful behavior in children, with the aim of nipping such behavior in the bud before it becomes a habit.
If left unchecked, a person who benefits from repeated untruthfulness will likely do more of it to the point of it becoming automated. This is a classic example of the basic principle of operant conditioning: people are more likely to repeat behaviors that are repeatedly rewarded. The authors of the British study asserted that lying increased in terms of self-interest, because the greatest lying occurred when only the adviser and not the partner benefited. However, because the experiment did not allow subjects to know when their advice was being rewarded, the likely remaining explanation for the lying is that they just adapted to lying, and it didn't bother them so much to exaggerate their estimates. The absence of feedback was a crucial part of the design. The authors point out that in the real world, feedback greatly affects the extent of dishonesty in terms of whether the deceiving person thinks there will be benefit or punishment.
Emotions are at the core of the problem of drifting into a habit of untruthfulness. Normally, we tend to feel guilty when doing something we know is wrong, that is, when we have gone beyond our untruthfulness set-point. However, as we get in a habit of being untruthful, the associated shame or guilt dissipates. We get used to it, and our conscience doesn't bother us so much—a lower set-point emerges. So, we are less constrained in our future behavior. Each little untruthful act can escalate and negatively change the person we are.
One bad habit that is easy to fall into is denial. What is the typical first reaction to getting caught at bad thoughts or bad behavior? Remember when you were a kid in school when the teacher wanted to find out who did a certain bad deed. How did the class respond when she said, for example, “Who wrote this graffiti on the board?” A knee-jerk, “Not me,” goes out the cry, including from the kid who was the perpetrator. In other words, a common first response to being confronted is to deny the facts. Many children never outgrow this denial tendency.
Such denial and rationalization can become a habit. For example, a student may deny that laziness or personal problems are responsible for poor grades, rationalizing instead with a belief that the teachers are ineffective or the courses are irrelevant and boring. Eventually, people with problem attitudes and behaviors may have no choice but to admit the facts when denial becomes too awkward and implausible. Once denial is no longer tenable, an automatic response is to develop a habit of deception, deceiving others and even oneself. The alcoholic may try to hide bottles of liquor or to sneak drinks when family or friends are not watching.
The most common response to having one’s misdeeds or poor behavior discovered is to make excuses. I used to do a lot of that, now hopefully much less. I could write a whole book on that, and I did (Blame Game. How to Win It).

Behavior of Others

People certainly learn values about truthfulness from others. If the people you work and associate with place a high value on truthfulness, then you are more prone to be truthful to fit in and to avoid ostracism.
Various forms of untruthfulness can spread like an infectious disease. For example, some experiments by behavioral economist, Dan Ariely, were conducted so that unpunished cheating could occur. In one such study, experimenters planted an actor student in the room who publicly claimed he solved an implausible number of the test problems. The level of cheating by other students in the room increased, suggesting that cheating can be infectious. In test teamwork experiments, students increased cheating if they thought it would benefit their teammates as well as themselves.
Under real-world conditions, the most common way to spread untruthfulness is to repeat it, again and again. A lie, for example, repeated often enough becomes believable. This is why advertisers keep repeating the same commercial. Whatever the exaggerated claims of benefit of the product, the repetition seeps into an audience’s subconscious to become engraved as believed. This is why news media push an agenda by harping on a story theme until they shape public opinion about an issue or politician. This is why politicians use repetition to discredit and demonize their opponents.
As misinformation is repeated again and again, more and more people come to believe it.  This leads to “argument by authority” to rationalize dishonesty. Then too, the more prevalent lying, denial, pretense, etc. become in a social group, the more we either become accepting or tolerant of it. People tend to tolerate what is common, because that is “just the way things are.”  Even if you want to mount a challenge, it would just be too much trouble and not likely to be successful. Complying with the group norm is akin to the thinking error of arguing from authority, only in this case, the deception has undeserved status.

Learning to be Truthful


I am currently working on a book called, Realville, How to Get Real in an Unreal World.  There is so much misinformation, disinformation, and weaponizing of information in our society that I feel compelled to try to motivate us all to be more honorable and forthright.
One section of the book deals with the question of how people learn values about truthfulness and learn to recognize and moderate their natural tendencies to lie, cheat, deceive, delude, pretend, and withhold. I identify four main sources for such learning:
·         Child rearing
·         Education
·         Habit
·         Behavior of others.

Child Rearing


Michael Lewis, a prominent psychologist at Rutgers, has conducted many studies on how children learn from well-meaning parents how to lie and deceive. Certain ways of expressing emotion are taught to be acceptable, while others are not. For example, in one experiment, investigators taught children to express sadness when their mother left them with a baby sitter. However, the reality was that they were not sad and recovered quickly when the mother left. Other examples are how children learn to express responses to minor injuries. Some kids are taught that it is alright to over-react, while others are taught not to act like sissies.
It is hard to know how a child really feels, because parents are continually teaching them how they are supposed to feel and how to express feelings and reactions to life events. When children become adults, a lifetime of conditioning about expressing emotions creates problems for mental health workers to treat patients, because true feelings may be so buried and masked.
Three primary factors affect how children learn to think and behave in untruthful ways in which they do it to:
1. Avoid negative consequences or punishment.
2. Protect their ego from assaults on their sense of self-worth or confidence.
3. Benefit themselves or take advantage of others.
No wonder untruthful behavior is so common. In some respects, Lewis thinks this is a good thing, reflecting mental development to become more emotionally and socially competent as an adult. However, character development is corrupted.
Lewis and his colleagues conducted some classical experiments in young children that revealed how their tendency for untruthful behavior changed with age. The researchers secretly videotaped children in an honesty test in which they were told not to peek at a toy that was placed behind them. The child was told that the adult had to leave the room for a few minutes, but when she comes back they could play with the toy.
While the investigator was out of the room, 100% of children as young as two peeked at the toy. When asked if they peeked, 38% of two-year-olds lied about it. However, among six-year-olds, one-hundred percent of peekers lied about it. Boys generally had less self-control in resisting peeking, but no sex differences occurred in the extent of lying. The fact that all six-year-olds lied indicates a serious need to instruct children at this age on the virtue of telling the truth.
Clear correlations occurred with other aspects of cognitive function. For example, how quickly a child yielded to the temptation of peeking varied with IQ. Those who peeked sooner had lower IQ scores. They also had less emotional intelligence, that is, were less able to name the emotions revealed by pictures of human faces and less able to predict the kind of emotion they would generate to certain experiences. I have to wonder: If parents and 1st-grade teachers made more of an effort to teach honest, would 6-year olds increase their IQ and emotional intelligence?
Children also learn self-deception at rates that vary with age. A child learns to avoid or minimize honest judgments that unnecessarily diminish their self-esteem. Blame shifting or excuses come naturally to children. At the same time, a child can learn when honest self-appraisal serves the useful purpose of avoiding future mistakes or taking some necessary action.
Even so, Lewis and others perversely contend that lying and deception are normal and good, because they relieve the physiological and psychological consequences of stress. Lying seems to be associated with pro-social behavior and with creativity.
Pretend play provides a paradigm for studying self-deception. Very young children imitate the actions of others around them. As they get a little older, they pretend that one toy is doing something with another toy, as for example, toy soldiers engaging in battle.
Pretend play begins at around age one.  Lewis gives the example of a one-year-old who imitates seeing his mother talking on the phone. By age two or three the child might pretend that her doll is talking on the phone. By three years of age, a child is able to consider success or failure of the play and to assign blame or credit for it. At this point, self-conscious emotions have emerged that lead to shame for failure and pride in success.
More condemnable is to be untruthful to benefit oneself and taking advantage of others in the process, as when a child lies about a misdeed and blames it on an innocent, such as a sibling. Unfortunately, there seems to be little research on childhood development of this level of dishonesty. How does it change with age? What factors promote it? Or mitigate it? The social consequences are profound. For example, child siblings who lie about each other may become alienated from each other the rest of their lives.
Biology wires children to behave falsely. Where do they learn moral values and respect for truth? Traditionally, this was in houses of worship. However, as many parents are leaving formal religion, this teaching is increasingly absent. We know that teaching of children has lasting effects, good or bad. Both Jesuits and Communist Lenin have claimed, "Give me a child until age seven, and I have that child for life."

Education


Education can be a factor in promoting untruths because it trains the brain in thinking skills.  Educated people may be more tolerant of deceptive behavior, more effective at it, more adept at rationalizing why they do it, and they will likely be clever enough to get away with it. Getting away with it provides positive reinforcement that engenders more dishonesty.
Knowledge and life experience do change what a person thinks of as true. This can be illustrated with Winston Churchill's famous quote, "If a young man is not a socialist by the time he is 20, he has no heart. ...If he is not a conservative by the time he is 40, he has no brain."
Of course, highly intelligent youngsters can figure a lot of this out on their own. However, they need to question, and many humans are prone to take things at face value. They are easily manipulated by false teaching.
A questioning mindset formed the basis of the life of Socrates, whose mission was to show people the importance of introspection, asking questions, and reasoning to answer those questions. In my decades of teaching at the college level, I have learned that most students are intellectually compliant and do not question. Maybe this reflects prior teaching in k-12.  Even at the college level, an emphasis on career training limits use of the Socratic method of teaching. The desire to “educate the masses” provides students with the corrosive experience of 12 or more years of taking multiple-choice quizzes where each question is framed in only one way and supposedly only has one correct answer.

Habit

To illustrate just how powerful this habit of deception can be, I remember that when I quit smoking I had occasional dreams over several years where I had hidden a pack of cigarettes and cheated on my pledge to quit smoking.

Because deception is usually discovered, the only real hope is to do something constructive to resolve the problem that tempts one to deny and deceive.

The list goes on. Can you believe everything you read? ... everything you hear? ... even everything you see? In this age of Photoshop, botox, and breast implants, the truth eludes us, made harder to find in the world-wide disinformation morass of the Internet, hundreds of TV channels, and social media.

THIS BOOK shows you how to recognize, understand, and pursue truth in all its forms of betrayal: lying, cheating, denial, delusion, deception, pretension, and withholding. The focus of this book is on truthfulness in our everyday lives in the family, school, workplace, and social activities. Three foundational chapters show readers how to:

1.    Recognize untruthfulness in any of its forms, 
2.    Analyze what causes people to be untruthful, even unintentionally,
3.    Employ strategies to become more truthful themselves and thus more trustworthy. 

This book is not just about the fake news of politics or monopolistic newspapers, or agenda-driven TV news anchors. It is about the value of evidence as the basis for establishing what we regard as true. Without evidence, people drift into irrationality and magical thinking. In human culture, disregard for evidence and truth foments distrust, alienation, and animosity.  I hope to sensitize us to the importance of evidence, as opposed to opinion, which often masquerades as fact.

This book should appeal to several kinds of people:

     Those who want to spot the charlatans, manipulators, and others they should not trust.
     Those bent on becoming a more honorable person more able to live up to the ethical standards of their personal values, profession, culture, and religious faith. 
     Those in all situations where character development is taught: the family, schools, churches, the military, and the legal profession. A closing feature of the book is a process and worksheet template that people can use for a variety of real-world situations.
