The purpose of any memorization should be to promote informed thinking, not blind recitation. I apply this principle to textbooks too.

I have read all of both the Qur'an and the Bible several times and conclude that neither has the intellectual merit to justify word-for-word memorization. It is the positive spiritual themes that we should focus on, not the "letter of the law," whether Sharia or Mosaic. That, I think, was the message of Jesus who chastised the ancient Jews for their unthinking literalism and gave those of us today the challenge of seeking the truths of religious understanding.Dr. Bill, "Memory Medic"https://www.blogger.com/profile/10057519951340787796noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14867039.post-76391707524042260492011-08-13T22:12:48.783-05:002011-08-13T22:12:48.783-05:00Good Evening.

What is your advice for students who want to memorize the Qur'an verbatim in Classical Arabic? The Saudi Arabian edition is 604 pages long. How are the study methods different for young children vs. adults? What is the best way to study the vocabulary and translations?

One famous method is the Mauritanian method of memorization:

Mahdara (traditional Mauritanian Islamic school description)
http://www.mahdara.com/aboutus.php

Methods of Memorization in Mauritania
http://www.sunniforum.com/forum/showthread.php?10435-Methods-of-Memorization-in-Mauritania

An Applied Linguistics Approach to Improving the Memorization of the Holy Quran: Suggestions for Designing Practice Activities for Learning and Teaching
http://digital.library.ksu.edu.sa/paper1251.html

and there are other similar methods that rely on less repetitions for new lessons, and rely heavily on daily review after memorizing in 2 - 5 years.

Thank you.ANMBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06820088861178855675noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14867039.post-17247562873528141622010-09-28T18:36:38.721-05:002010-09-28T18:36:38.721-05:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13201801896613204515noreply@blogger.com
